The Department of Visual Communication Design (Original Department of Art Design) is a teaching and research unit dedicating to the study of various image information communication laws in the field of visual art design. Based on serving Beijing, this major is set to build a national cultural center and a livable capital of the world. The Department strives to cultivate good moral and high-quality innovative professionals with an international perspective who meet the needs of the economic and social development of the country and the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and adapt to the development of modern visual communication design industry.

     Since its establishment in 1958, this major upgraded the target from cultivating art and crafts talents who inherit traditional Chinese culture to high-quality innovative ones. The major has gone through three periods of commercial art, decoration design and visual communication design. In the course of more than 6 decades of development, it has built an innovative talent training system that meets the needs of the national and Beijing economic and social development and is compatible with the research university. After long-term experience, it has reserved strong faculty members, established complete teaching facilities, formed complete teaching system, and cultivated a large number of excellent art and design talents. In 2021, it was recognized as a first-class professional construction point in Beijing.
 
     This major closely focuses on the needs of Beijing's economic and social development, and adheres to the position of "base in Beijing, integrate into Beijing, radiate the whole country, and face the world". It attaches great importance to the integration of the capital's history and culture with the context of the new era, focuses on the display of national identity, the dissemination of Chinese culture, and the promotion of national spirit. Under the background of new liberal arts, it applies itself on the first-class discipline construction platform of Beijing University of Technology (BJUT) and carries out the construction of multidisciplinary and cross-integrated professional curriculum system.
 
    This major focuses on cultivating students' creative, aesthetic and expressive abilities in the fields of graphic printing media and modern digital media, imaging and network technology, as well as the combination of teaching, scientific research and market practice, and problems-solving ability in information communication, structure and market. The dual-teacher teachers with enterprise background and the school-enterprise dual-tutor teaching team fully exert the advantages of the teaching mode of industry-university-research integration to realize the social transformation of teaching achievements. Professors of disciplines serve as experts in the Expert Steering Committee for the 70th Anniversary of the Founding of the People's Republic of China and the Centenary of the Founding of the Communist Party of China, professionally serve the construction of the country and the capital, and undertake a number of design tasks for large-scale activities that convey national values and promote national spirit. Such as the design of the National Day celebration, the design of the large-scale achievement exhibition of the 70th anniversary of the People's Republic of China, and the official poster design of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, the official poster design of the Beijing 2008 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the design of the Beijing Winter Olympic and Paralympic Exhibition Center, the exhibition design of "Great Change - Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of Reform and Opening Up", the visual design of the large-scale achievement exhibition of "Five Years of Endeavor" and many other major national design works.
 
    Through a series of practical training such as basic design, design special courses, comprehensive design projects and graduation projects and on the basis of emphasizing students' mastery of basic theories, this major highlights the professional characteristics of the close combination of theory and design practice, and improves students' ability of design and development and independent research by strengthening the cultivation of their ability to implement complete design projects. The main courses are: design thinking, graphic language, information symbols, photography light and modeling, font design, layout design, interface design, illustration design, image editing design, visual identity system design, book design, advertising design, packaging design, interactive visual design and thematic design.
