Taking the inheritance of Chinese traditional culture of arts and crafts as the starting point, the Art and Design is one of the earliest majors in China to cultivate arts and crafts talents. The past 63 years has witnessed the different historical periods such as earning foreign exchange through export, reform and opening up, and socialist construction in the new era; The professional major has developed from the Department of Special Arts, the Department of Metalworking, the Department of Decorative Arts, to today's Department of Arts and Crafts, which has made a lot of contributions to the inheritance of traditional arts and crafts in the capital, the construction of theoretical system and the development of cultural and creative industries in the capital. With complete teaching facilities and reasonable teacher structure, this major has trained 18 Chinese arts and crafts masters, nearly 100 provincial and ministerial arts and crafts masters, more than 10 national, provincial and ministerial intangible inheritors, and nearly 1,000 outstanding design talents. The Arts and Crafts major was rated as "2021 National First-class Undergraduate Construction Major".
 
     Since its establishment, the Department of Arts and Crafts has always relied on the rich historical and cultural resources of the capital, focusing on the construction of national cultural centers and cities of museums in the new era and the inheritance and innovative development of excellent traditional Chinese arts and crafts, gradually building a high-quality and innovative design talent cultivating system. And it has established the positioning of running a school relying on Beijing, integrating into Beijing, radiating the whole country and facing the world. It has formed: a characteristic professional framework featuring national master team course + comprehensive material development course + art design laboratory course.
 
    Main professional courses: lacquer art course group, metalworking jewelry course group, fiber craft course, glass craft course, ceramic craft course, craft daily necessities design, craft gift design, craft and art creation, comprehensive material and craft design, arts and crafts master off-campus practical course, etc.
 
    here are 14 in-service teachers in this major: 2 professors, 5 associate professors and 7 lecturers; There are 8 Chinese arts and crafts masters and 5 foreign experts. The faculty team adheres to combining manual inheritance with teaching innovation, theory and practice, and steadily improves the quality of teaching.
 
    This major focuses on the cultivation of arts and crafts talents who inherit the "Eight Uniques of Yanjing" in the capital. It takes the historical and cultural resources of the capital with Beijing accent and Beijing charm as the innovative resources of contemporary arts and crafts. Meanwhile it prioritizes the promotion of national art and culture and integrates contemporary scientific and technological achievements, lays emphasis on innovation, creation and design capabilities, and meets the public's needs for a better life.
 
   We have gained incredible teaching achievements. In the past three years, 23 students’ works have been selected for national exhibitions held by the China Art Association and the China National Arts and Crafts Society, and many works have been collected by professional art institutions. Students also participated in other professional exhibitions for more than 60 times. In the past three years, the employment rate of undergraduate students in the Department of Arts and Crafts has reached nearly 100%, among which the graduate study rate is 32.8%, and the international study rate is 22.4%, including world-class design schools such as the Royal College of Art, University of the Arts London, and Tokyo University of the Arts. After graduation, the students mainly work in cultural and art departments, traditional craft processing fields, design companies, schools and other enterprises and institutions. Most of them engage in the design and production of traditional and modern arts and crafts, teaching and research related to arts and crafts, design management, protection of intangible cultural heritage, restoration of cultural relics, etc., such as: Xinhua News Agency, Arts and Crafts Group, the Forbidden City and other cultural departments.
